U point
The service access point between NT1 and LE ISDN equipment. See also LE, NT1, S point, SAP.

UDP
User Datagram Protocol; a connectionless, unreliable, transport network protocol for the exchange of replies between network hosts. See also TCP.

underrun
A gap in played or recorded speech caused because the host application did not provide speech buffers to the board in a timely fashion. The time limit is a function of the board buffer size and encoding data rate.

unformatted file
See flat file.

universal port
A port that can use any combination of IVR or fax functions. If a system is configured for universal ports, the application can use any combination of IVR functions such as voice play, voice record, tone detection, and tone generation with fax transmit or fax receive functions. Switching between these two functions within a single phone call is supported in a universal port configuration. In RealTime NaturalFax, a universal port does not include speech vocoding functions.

unsolicited events
Events that are not generated in response to a command.

user category
In MFC-R2 and E&M protocols, the digit received by the inbound application that indicates the Group I category of incoming ANI digits; e.g., normal subscriber, operator, maintenance equipment. See also ANI, E&M, MFC-R2.

Invoke.

user exception dictionary
Part of the NaturalText software that filters text for difficult-to-pronounce words or acronyms, and replaces specified entries with clearly pronounceable words or phrases.
