3.1 Introduction

This chapter lists the procedure for installing the QX 2000 driver and software under Windows NT 4.0.

You can install QX software in any of the following ways:

3.2 Installing Under Windows NT

This section provides instructions for installing the QX 2000 driver and software under the Windows NT 4.0 operating system.

Note: Before installing the QX 2000 driver and software, ensure that any previous installation has been removed by the procedure described in Section 3.2.3, Uninstalling the Driver Software.

The installation program determines how many QX 2000 boards are in the system, and then creates the QX configuration file.

Note: Make sure all QX 2000 boards are installed in the system before running the installation program.

Refer to \nms\doc\readme_qx.txt for a complete list of the files installed with the QX 2000 board, a list of important notices, documentation errata, and changes from previous releases of the QX 2000 software.
WARNING:

Some PC BIOS may fail to recognize the QX 2000 board unless the Windows NT Service Pack 3 is installed.

3.2.1 Running the Installation Program

This procedure describes how to install the QX board driver software for Windows NT 4.0. This procedure is applicable if you wish to install from:

You can also use the Natural Access setup program to install this package from the CD-ROM. To learn how to install the software this way, refer to the booklet that comes with the CD-ROM for installation instructions.

Note: Install your QX boards in your system before installing the software. (See Chapter 2 to learn how to do this.)

  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.

  2. Start the QX setup program:

    • If you are installing from the CD-ROM using the QX setup program, use the Windows Explorer to navigate to the \qx\disk1\ directory on the CD-ROM, and start setup.exe.

    • If you are installing from a package downloaded from the NMS web site, "unzip" the package into a directory. Navigate to the directory, and start setup.exe.

      The setup program starts.
    • Answer the prompts as they appear.

The setup program asks you for the following:
      • A directory to install the software into.

      • A program folder to install the software icons into.

      • System environment variable setting options.

You can let the setup program modify settings, or save the changes to a batch file, or not make any changes at all.
Note: If the program detects previously installed files that are newer than the versions contained in the package, it asks you whether to install or skip the files in question. Typically, you should NOT overwrite newer files.
      • When the installation is complete, reboot your system.

Note: Make sure to reboot your system after installation, as directed by the setup program. The driver will not be available until you reboot.

      • After rebooting your system, run qxload with the -cfg option in the installation directory (e.g., c:\nms\qx\bin), or select the program folder Natural MicroSystems QX / Hardware Configuration.

A default QX configuration file is created automatically.
      • Run qxload with the -bx option in the installation directory (e.g., c:\nms\qx\bin), or select the program folder Natural MicroSystems QX / QX Hardware Initialization.

The default files are downloaded to the QX 2000 board and the board is initialized.

3.2.2 Changing the Configuration After Installation

If you add additional QX 2000 boards to your system, modify the driver configuration after you have completed the installation process.

To change your QX software configuration:

      1. Make sure all QX 2000 boards are installed in the system, as described in Chapter 2.

      2. Back up the qx.cfg file by saving it as qx.sav.

      3. Run qxload with the -cfg option in the installation directory (e.g., c:\nms\qx\bin), or select the program folder Natural MicroSystems QX / Hardware Configuration.

      4. Edit the new qx.cfg file to include any modifications you made in the old configuration file (qx.sav).

Refer to Section 5.4.7 for information on assigning a new board number.

      5. Run qxload with the -bx option in the installation directory (e.g., c:\nms\qx\bin), or select the program folder Natural MicroSystems QX / Hardware Initialization.

Refer to Section 5.4 for details on running qxload.

      3.2.3 Uninstalling the Driver Software

Before uninstalling, stop any application running on the QX 2000 boards.

Note: If you uninstall Natural Access, the QX software is also uninstalled.

To remove QX software from a Windows NT system:

      1. Click Start. Select Settings, and then Control Panel.

        The Control Panel Folder appears.
      2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.

The Add/Remove Programs dialog box appears.
      3. In the list of packages in the dialog box, select QX.

To remove all Natural Access products at once, select Natural Microsystems Natural Access.
      4. Click Remove.

The software is removed from the system.
      5. In Start>Settings>Control Panel>System, select the Environment tab.

      6. Select the QXLOAD system variable, then select Delete.

      7. Select the Path system variable and edit the path to remove the QX entry (e.g., c:\nms\qx\bin).

      8. Reboot your system.

3.3 Initializing the QX 2000 Board

A default QX configuration file is created by the QX 2000 software installation program. The default file is c:\nms\qx\cfg\qx.cfg.

Some statements in the QX configuration file are set to defaults which should be updated for your system. For example, each QX 2000 board is configured as an MVIP clock slave. If a QX 2000 board is the MVIP clock master, edit the QX configuration file accordingly. See Chapter 5 for details about the QX configuration file.

To initialize a QX 2000 board:
