Glossary
- Audio Compression Manager (ACM)
An extension of the basic Windows NT multimedia subsystem that decodes or encodes waveform-audio data before passing it to or from a waveform-audio device driver.
- API Application Programming Interface; a library of function calls that allow an application developer to access functionality in a uniform and consistent way.
- CT Access Natural MicroSystems' development environment for telephony applications.
- CT Access Runtime Runtime software used by the NMS TSP to configure and control NMS hardware.
- DLL Dynamic Link Library; a library of software object modules that can be loaded and accessed on demand.
- DTMF Dual-Tone-Multi-Frequency; an in-band signaling system that uses two simultaneous voice-band tones.
- inbound call A call received by an inbound application, placed by a remote party.
- Kbps Kilobits per second, 1000 bits per second.
- KBps Kilobytes per second, 1000 bytes per second.
- NMS Natural MicroSystems Corporation.
- NMS TSP A TAPI telephony service provider (TSP) component of NMS TAPI that supplies the interface between TAPI and NMS telephony hardware. See also TSP.
- NMS WAVE A WAVE driver provided with NMS TAPI that supplies the interface between the Windows multimedia subsystem and NMS telephony hardware.
- protocol (telephony) Defined procedure for call setup and call teardown.
- PSTN Public Switched Telephone Network; a public telephone network.
- WAVE Microsoft file format supporting various speech encodings, typically PCM.
- TSP Telephony Service Provider: Vendor-supplied components used to provide telephony resources to applications using the TAPI interface.
- TAPI Telephony Application Programming Interface: Set of functions provided by Microsoft that enables programming of telephone line-based devices in a device-independent manner. TAPI supports both speech and data transmission, allows for a variety of terminal devices, and supports connection types and call-management techniques such as conference calls, call waiting, and voice mail.
- WOSA Windows Open Systems Architecture: Microsoft's software architecture that provides a single system-level interface for connecting front-end applications with back-end services. Windows Telephony is part of WOSA.
