Video content streaming growth has slowed globally

Worldwide consumer use of video streaming services slowed to 1% in the fourth quarter of 2022. On an annualized basis, streaming globally grew by 7%, according to a report by analytics company Conviva.

Experts say the reason for the surge in use of streaming platforms was the pandemic — people were spending more time at home and were constantly looking for fresh, creative content provided by streaming publishers.

“Streaming continues the significant growth seen over the past eight quarters. The rate of growth may be slowing, but the streaming industry is now firmly entrenched and unlikely to ever return to pre-pandemic levels,” points out Conviva CEO Keith Zubcevic.

Analysts also draw attention to the trend in the use of smart TVs for streaming content. Thus, as a whole, the indicator increased by 47% year-on-year. The share of Android TV increased 42%, LG increased 36%, and Samsung increased 27%. Use of IPTV and OTT devices was down 2%, although Roku was up 12%. Amazon Fire TV showed a 7% drop, and Apple TV was down 1%.

For its report, Conviva collected data based on 500 million viewers watching 200 billion streams a year using 4 billion apps.
